Fun loving
couple (age 23) are looking to crew from Thailand (though flexible) to
just about anywhere... We have just finished a 5 months backpacking trip, and are searching for a new adventure. We have no sailing experience (much to our regret), but we love the ocean, love the outdoors, and are willing and able to work hard and catch on quickly. We are currently in Thailand, and are free for the next 2-3 months. Would love to hear from you.... Daphne + Gilad daphnefriedman@hotmail.com |

Hi there!
We are two South African females (both 22)
looking to crew and sail around the world. Karen has some sailing
experience and a yachthand certificate, and Rochelle is a brilliant
cook. We are both hard workers and eager learners. Easy going and
fun loving, we are looking for a yacht with the same ideals: to have fun
and enjoy the adventure. Preferably we would like to start beginning
Dec 2001 and from South Africa, but not fussy. As we aren't that rich, to
be paid would be great! But otherwise we'll take it as it comes.
Please get hold of us at kar@geckotech.co.za.
Can't wait!
Karen and Rochelle

New
Beginnings for Youth is an Ottawa based charity that delivers a "Passport
Program". It involves a 34' C&C "Cookie
Monster" that has been converted into a floating classroom during the months of July
and August. Each Monday starting in July the vessel leaves Ganaoque and sails
to Kingston, Main Duck Island and returns through the 1000 Islands. We carry
four youth (grade 9 to 12) and two staff: one Captain and a counselor.
As the program is co-ed it requires that our summer staff are also co-ed. We
cover all out of pocket expenses and offer a salary of $500/week while on the boat.
It is a fun program. The sailing offers the youth an opportunity to take on special
challenges and responsibilities while at the same time getting actively involved in
learning about history, geography, math and environmental issues. They also learn to take
great pride in their abilities. Although we are not racing, there is often room for the
challenges of not being overtaken by other cruisers. It is a fun summer. We have been delivering the program since 1986 without incident and pride ourselves on both our attention to safety and the delivery of the program. Contact Rob Tripp at mail@nbfy.com, or visit their webpage: www.nbfy.com. |

Going the Distance My name's David Savage or Sav to most. I'm backpacking and boat hoping around the world and I started in India in March. I will be working my way around in the usual budget / traveler style, the odd job here and there, mixed in with the odd couch and floor to sleep on. As you'd expect I have no strict timetable or itinerary. The places I go will depend on the journey as it unfolds, influenced by the people I meet, opportunities which arise and the inevitable, but unpredictable law of luck or bad luck, as the case may sometimes turn out to be. I've left behind a comfortable home in London and a reasonable career, exchanging it all for the adventure and challenge of the open road. Big deal - hundreds of people take off every year, but I'm also on a mission. I'm a photographer and writer and I'll be documenting the whole journey as part of a project I have been working on called 'Going the Distance'. I specialize in black and white, social documentary photography. My web site, www.eclipse.co.uk/savagemedia/sav explains all about my work, who I am and where I'm coming from. Much of the work I have done over the last five years has already made a good contribution to the project. 'Going the Distance' is essentially a study of the planet's diversity, from the environment to the different cultures and societies of the world. The collection of work will give an insight into many different ways of life, celebrate some of the natural wonders of the world, as well as engage in some pressing social issues. From the perspective of a backpacker / boat hopper the work will also stir the spirit of adventure and challenge of travel. Distance is very important, it is very easy to get on a plane and be almost anywhere in the world within 24 hours. I want my work to convey a true sense of distance, so I'm electing not to fly wherever possible. There is far more adventure in traveling over land or across the great big blue. I aim to publish the work on my return in a photo led book, which will coincide with a number of exhibitions in the UK. I have already been offered exhibitions as well as receiving interest from an American lady who is considering organizing me an exhibition in New York. I will travel with a laptop computer and where practical. I aim to serialize to journey as I go, publishing features onto my web site. The web site is a useful to tool for gaining help and support and it also enables me to thank everyone who helps. Some businesses or projects may find the exposure rewarding. This is, I might add, a non commissioned project. I considered postponing the trip to secure a publisher and sponsorship but this could have taken months, so it's a case action not talk. There will be a variety of themes I will cover over the journey, each of which will stand well as individual features and exhibitions. One theme which I really want explore is traveling the world by boat, calling in many different ports meeting people from a variety of cultures. So there you have it. Any help with securing passage on boats, or work in different places is very much appreciated and if you hear of any interesting stories or projects please let me know. |
