Shackles and snaps are used for very similar purposes, because once in place, they will not open on their own.  Their use is also very wide.  Mainly they are employed in attaching halyard ends to a sail, they may be used to attach the luff of the main to the mast if slugs are being used for this purpose instead of a boltrope.  They are also attached to the jib or spinnaker sheets.
