HISTORY IN PROGRESS

April 11 - 17

  • Magellan has launched the promised GSC 100.  It is the very first world, satellite communicator.  Thanks to it you can now send email messages from everywhere in the world, because the "gadget" uses 28 satellites out of the 36 (which the GPS uses).  You don't have to hook it up to your laptop, and since it has a built-in GPS, you'll also know where in the world you are!  The GSC 100 uses 140mhz frequencies, and you can add an interesting feature to it, named ORBweather.  You will then receive a position-sensitive weather forecast for the next 24 to 48 hours.  There is an activation, and a monthly fee for this service (not a lot, though!).  And the best thing of all, the unit is not very expensive when compared to what you get (right now it goes for about $1000 USD).
  • Apr. 11 - 30: A series of seminars - Rick White's Sailing Seminars (beach catamarans: 11 - 16, and dinghies: 25 - 30) - will take place at Plantation Yacht Harbor in Key Largo, Florida, USA.  For more info call 305-451-3287.

  • Apr. 16 - 18: Black Tie Regatta (for scows) will take place at Rush Creek YC in Rockwall, TX, USA.  If you want to know more call them at 972-771-6500.

  • Apr. 17 - 18: Free-Sailing Weekend (23- to 40-foot keelboats) will occur at the Boston Sailing Center, MA, USA.  Call the center for more information at 617-227-4198.

  • Apr. 14 - 18: Pacific Sail Expo is taking place at the Jack London Square in Oakland, CA, USA.  Call Karen Kelly for more info at 401-841-0900.
