  • If you thought that you can't get far enough away without losing contact with people on the shore, think once again.  People at Magellan have thought of this neat idea called GSC 100 which you can use to send and receive email messages.  If your wallet is big enough you can even combine the good old GPS with this new thingey!  If you are more interested in it, check out this site:

  • ProFurl has also come up with a new, nice idea.  They made a ProFurl In-Boom Reefing Furling System.  If you think it's for the lazy type, think about people sailing only by themselves, or how much safer it is to reef your mainsail, when suddenly it starts to blow really hard.  And one other thing - I believe that your mainsail would benefit from it, too.  Well, why don't you see their site and decide for yourself:

  • Boatbuilding idea:    JY Sailboats have a sole worldwide sailboat building rights to ACP (Advanced Composite Process).  It is a sandwiched combination of plastic, foam, and fiberglass.  They have been building their boats using this since  the beginning of the 90s (JY Sailboats is a contract builder for Hunter Marine's line of small boats, by the way), but problems began to unfold.  The outermost cover (the ABS: acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) began to soften up and peel, high temperatures caused gaps in the ACP core.  They have now improved this with a newer technology involving a UV resistant plastic called Luran S (put as the outer 30% of the material), and bleeder valve-type air vents added to the molds.  While there are drawbacks to this technology (the boat needs to be white due to temperature issues, it can be tricky to repair the breaches, and to install new equipment), the boats are durable, labour (thus, cost) effective, and stiff.  To learn more, you can find an article about it in "Sail" magazine by Tom Linskey ("Brave New Boatbuilding"), it's a July '98 issue, vol.29/no7.  Pp. 56-57.
