- Maptech has recently come up with possibly the best
digital charts ever. They are the Maptech Photo-Enhanced Digital Charts. The
beautiful thing about it (at least I love it!) is that the screen on your computer is
divided in half, and on one side you see the usual chart, and on the other there is an
aerial picture of the same area. While this is connected to your GPS, you can also
see how your boat moves along - the picture changes each time you move from one chart to
another. The charts are full-color copies made from NOAA's digital files - Maptech
has an exclusive licence to do this. The charts come on a CD, which contains up to
25 charts for a region, and it costs about $149 USD. Visit their website for a demo!

- With joy combined with sadness I'm bringing you the news that Around Alone Race is over. All skippers are
now in Charleston (with the last one in on May 29th), and the most amazing race of all is
done. We'll wait another four years for this event - maybe some of us will this time
go for it! While I, and I'm sure many of you, will feel somehow empty from now on,
remember, that America's Cup is approaching fast, too! Check out the Around Alone
website and register to receive email newsletters regarding America's Cup 2000. To
bring that amazing race to a nice end, please read the following. Neil Hunter
(Paladin II) said this about the Around Alone race: ""Now that it's finished, it
brings it down to a level of realism," he said. "It can be done. It's real. It
happens. There are people like me out there that are dreamers. But if you give them a
chance to have a go, they'll have a go. It's nice. This race gives people the chance to
live out their dreams."
