HISTORY IN PROGRESS

November 15 - 21

  • Lewmar Marine has developed a winch that will raise your main and genoa by the push of the button.  They have done this for the Whitbread and America's Cup races, and now are selling it to you.  It is supposedly very efficient (low battery drain), but with great power.  It is compact, and easy to install and maintain.  If you are interested in this new gadget, visit them at www.lewmar.com, or send them an email at lewmaruk@lewmar.com.

HINT: try to do your shopping in bookstores, electronics stores, or hardware stores - stores specializing in marine equipment are generally much more expensive, but not necessarily better equipped - try to contact companies making a certain product: they might be able to direct you to the best source.  ALSO: when Internet shopping beware of those shipping and handling charges, as well as what currency they are talking about (for us Canadians it may make a big difference if it's ours or the US dollar...).

  • As the Around Alone race progresses, it is almost the end of Leg 1.  Most of the sailors are now in Cape Town, but a few are still a few miles off the coast.  It is expected that the last boat will cross the line in Cape Town on November 30.  One of the most dramatic stories happening during this first leg is one of Viktor Yazykov injured elbow.  He injured it during the trip from Russia to Charleston, and while the doctors advised him not to go on with the race, he did not listen.  During the sail to Cape Town the elbow swell and with the help of Dr. Dan Carlin via email he performed a surgery on himself.  While the surgery went well, he continued with some treatment of his own in order to stop the bleeding, and ended up almost losing his entire arm.   Now he's safe in South Africa, and under the care of the doctors.  He has ordered a new power supply to his boat, because lack of it has prevented him from contacting Dr. Carlin before cutting off blod flow to his arm.  To read about the whole story visit http://www.aroundalone.com/coverage/news/leg1/981118_03n5_yazykov_int.html.
