HISTORY IN PROGRESS

October 4 - 10

  • Horizon Marine Electronics have invented a submersible VHF radio (Horizon HX350S VHF radio). Even though I have never used a handheld radio, it's easy to see the advantages of this one.  It has a 10 hour rechargeable battery together with a charger, a large LCD display, backlit keys (for night use), NOAA Weather Alert, and it's submersible to 3 feet for up to 30 minutes.  While that's not much (the depth and the time), it's still the most there is!  If you want more info write to marine@standardcomm.com or Horizon Marine Electronics; P.O. Box 92151; Los Angeles; CA; 90009-2151.  Or you can give them a call at 310-532-5300.

  • While this is not really a new product, it might be able to save your life.  A Para-Tech Sea Anchor is a parachute anchor that will keep you in place in extreme weather, such as a hurricane.  If you'd like to receive a free brochure, or contact the company that makes survival gear for sailors (and boaters in general), write to paratech@rof.net, or visit them at www.seaanchor.com.
  • Here is a novel idea (or rather very old one???).  If you're fed up with racing all this summer (yeah, right...) why not try to "relax" on an 18th century ship -   Endeavour.  It's a three masted collier bark, and you can enlist yourself as one of the crew (18 years or older), or simply as a passenger.  In case you're wondering, yes, it is a replica, but a very good one, too.   In 1768 Lt. James Cook took HM Bark Endeavour for a discovery voyage around the world.  It took him three years to complete this trip, on which he discovered and charted a large part of southern lands.  Today Endeavour has sailed to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Britain.  Now she's in North America, getting ready for Pacific Islands.  If you hurry you might still get on!  Visit them at http://www.greenwichuk.com/endeavour/index.html.
  • Oct. 9 - 12: the United States Sailboat Show will take place in Annapolis, Maryland, USA.  Admission is $12/adult and $6/child (12 and under), and it runs for most of the three days.  For more information about the show visit www.usboat.com, or call 410-267-6711.

  • Oct. 10 - 11: Ficker Cup (match racing, Catalina 37) takes place in Long Beach YC, CA, USA.  For more info call 562-598-9401.
