- Setamar has introduced a new design in winches. These are self-tailing winches do
not require many wraps around. Instead only a turn of 190 degrees is sufficient to
hold the line securely in place. If need be, you can then ease the line without
having to remove it from the device. These very interesting things come in sizes
from 8 to 50 in right- and left-hand rotation. For more info you can call
1-800-379-3330, or 1-954-760-4702. They are located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

- Loran shutdown has been scheduled for the year 2000, because of budgeting
considerations. However, many sailors still use this system, and many believe that
it is an excellent backup system for the GPS. Therefore, it has recently been
resolved that the loran-C radionavigation system will be still in use until the year 2008
- so that all problems with the GPS will be taken care of. The loran-C has been
operated by the Coast Guard since 1970s, but soon it will become a part of sailing
