  • Everyone is talking about it now...  The Around Alone 1998-1999 race.  It is supposed to go underway on Sep. 26 - this upcoming Saturday at 1600 Greenwich Mean Time (noon Eastern Daylight Time).  The fleet will begin their journey in Charleston, SC.    The race happens every four years, and this year is the fifth of them.   It spans 27,000 miles, and on its path are very rough and demanding seas and oceans.  It was originally the BOC Challenge (name derived from the company BOC), but now this race is established enough to be called what it really is: Around Alone...     This year's event has already experienced a few problems.  One of them is the withdrawal of five competitors from the race, among the latest Andy Darwent's (a 33 year old skipper from England), his was because of a severe damage to his rudder.   He simply has no time to make the necessary repairs.  The other problem is the possibility, that the race start will be delayed because of an approaching Hurricane Georges, and right after the Hurricane Jean.  The race officials keep a very close eye on those weather systems, and say that in spite of many people's disappointment, they will postpone the start if the safety of the sailors will be in danger because of these tropical storms.    There is a huge number of other immensely important news and information about the race, and you can find it on http://www.aroundalone.com.
