- For those who race small boats (JY-15, for example) there is a new little gadget to
consider. It is called Nexus Windwatch, weighs a mere 1.48 ounces (about 42 grams),
and you can hang it from your neck by a nylon lanyard. It will give you temperature
and wind readouts by the second, it is waterproof (even floating) to 16 feet (almost 5
meters), has a swivel casing, and a battery of four years. I'll say, it's just plain
cute... For more info call the Oakville Yacht Outfitters at 905-844-9733.
- If you have ever lost your winch handle in the depths of water, you'll appreciate this
new product. It's been made by Titan, and it is a carbon-fiber mold: strong and
stiff. It also floats, so you'll never again lose it (unless you can't complete your
"man overboard" manouver...). While it weighs only 12 ounces, it's price
is not that much heavier than usual... For more information contact Titan at
508-999-0050.

- They call it the "redefinition of sailing", and it is. You've
probably already heard about it - "Escape: the Sailboat for the Rest of Us".
It is a neat little invention sold in sizes from 6 to 12 feet long.
It is a toy, rather than a sailboat, but has some neat advantages: especially
if you let your kids sail it. It's got a carbon fibre rig, which means that
it's very light. It has the widest part in the water, so it's not easy to tip.
It also has an inbuilt "sailing instruction" based only on matching
colors (my worry is that with time you will tend to rely on matching colors and end up
getting into trouble on other boats!). And it has a SmartRig, wich allows you
to roll away a part or the whole sail - in case the wind gets stronger (sort of a furling
system). While many sailors will say, "yes, it's for the rest of them", I
just think that the ease of operation and safety of this little molded polyethylene boat
might be appealing for the young and the new to the sailing culture. For more
information, as well as to order one online (!!!) visit Escape Sailboat Company.
